SPRING RACING

TE AROHA HORSES FOR MARTON TRAINERS COX AND EYA Trainer J. Eva is anxious to give Gold Day longer striding work on the grass, and for this purpose leaves Te Aroha (where a splendid new course has been almost completed) for Matamata this week, where more tracks are open than is the case locally. If all goes well the Day Comet gelding will probably be competing at the Marton meeting on September 6. In the early spring of last year trainer A. Cox took a small team down to the Dannevirke and Marton meetings, and then went on to Wanganui. It is quite on the cards that Cox may do likewise in September, and if so will take Black Maire, Glenison, Indolent and Miss Albyn. This quartet is training on very well, so a Southern trip may be justified. The Marton Programme The following programme was approved for the Marton spring meeting on Saturday, September G: Trial Plate, of 100 sovs., 6 furlongs. Rata Hack Hurdles, of 130 sovs.; 12 miles. Spring Hack Cup, of 160 sovs (including a silver cup valued at 20 sovs, presented by Mr. A. T. Gatrell); 7 furlongs. Marton Handicap (open), of 200 sovs.; 11 miles. Hack Cup Steeplechase, of 13550v5.; 22 miles. Tutaenui Hack, of 130 sovs.; 1 mile and 137 yards. Railway Handicap (open), of 170 sovs.; 6 furlongs. Electric Hack, of 130 sovs.; 5 furlongs. Entries for all events close at 9 p.m. on Friday, August 15. STYLE IN HATS STORY OF A DREAM Quite a few people have been talking about the possibility of finding the winner of a race in a dream. The best story in this connection is told of a keen racegoer who. on the eve of an important race, dreamed persistently of a hat. • Next day, on reaching the course late, he ran his eye swiftly down the card, and seeing “Hateras,” promptly ceased his study to put a fiver on just before the bell rang. In a few moments he was chagrined to hear the shout, “Sombrero wins!"
