WRESTLING: ROUND 3
TOM RAY CRITICISES ASSOCIATION ATTITUDE AND PAYS FOR ADVERTISEMENT “Say, that's a peculiar way to go on," said Tom Ray, 'the wrestier with a thousand holds/ commenting on the action of the Auckland Wrestling Association in boycotting THE SUN, following a little honest comment by this newspaper. Last -week the association, still resentful of candid criticism, refused to advertise in The Sun, and Tom Alley, one of the principals in the match, paid for the advertisement out of his own pocket and was, at the same time, not
backward in criticising the actions of the association. Now, Ray, who wrestles next Monday, is puzzled by the attitude of the association in refusing to advertise his match in The Sun, and is also paying for an advertisement himself. JHe is not at all in sympathy with the pettifogging methods of the association. “This will be my first appearance in New Zealand, and I think it is necessary that the bout should be advertised, otherwise the wrestling enthusiasts reading The Sun will not bo acquainted with the current doings in the wrestling world. It is necessary to advertise any match, and especially so when a man is making his first appearance in a strange country no matter how well known his opponent may be. “I think, therefore, that the association is taking a peculiar attitude in not advertising the match in THE SUN, which I understand has done much to put wrestling on its feet in Auckland. I think that to refuse to advertise is a comical way of returning thanks. “The more newspaper publicity the association can obtain the better it will be for it. It is a strange stand. They are hurting themselves as well as the wrestlers.”
