STRAND
TWO FINE PICTURES The thrill of the thundering hoofs; a dangerous racecourse; a terrorstricken and ludicrous rider wearing his aweetheat’s colours, desperately trying to make the high jumps; an uncontrollable horse, “The Hottentot,” dashing to the finishing line; the glory of achieving a great victory—
Such is one of the many colourful sequences in Warner Bras.’ latest production, “The Hottentot,” coming to the Strand Theatre today, and adapted for the screen from the celebrated stage hit by Victor Mapes and William Collier. All the clamour and glamour of the steeplechase and the fascination of
watching trained and spirited horses forging to the front, are brought to the screen lb this comedy. Edward Everett Horton heads the all-star cast, appearing in tho role he portrayed with such remarkable success on the stage. The cast also includes Patsy Ruth Miller, Douglas Gerrard and Maude Turner Gordon. Cinemagoers will remember Helen Morgan for her appearances in the prologue to “Show Boat” and Ziegfeld Pollies in “Glorifying the American Girl.” Miss Morgan is making her first appearance in a full-length picture in “Roadhouse Nights,” the second feature at the Strand, in which she shares honours with Charles Ruggles. Miss Morgan plays the part of a rum king’s sweetheart, who meets her old love, Ruggles, a newspaper man, and attempts to flee with him from the toils of the bootlegger. Also featured are Fred Kohler, as the villainous rum king, and Clayton, Jackson and Durante, who provide the wealth of hilarious drolleries with which this feature picture is richly garnished.
Durante is seen and heard as a singing waiter. It is his first appearance in the movies, but it is a debut so successful that picturegoers everywhere will be clamouring for more after “Roadhouse Nights” is presented.
