In the Market Place

FEW PRICE CHANGES TOMATOES FROM ISLANDS Little change was recorded in any line offered at the auctions in the City Markets today, and prices generally were on a par with those of Tuesday. In some cases, indeed, as with eggs, there has been little or no alteration for some weeks, and there is little prospect of a change. Prices of poultry and vegetables especially seem very firm. The Waipahi, which arrived in Auckland yesterday afternoon, brought 1,780 cases of tomatoes and Island oranges, which are meeting with a fairly quick sale. The shipment of mandarins from Sydney early this week was considerably smaller than usual, and many lines from Australia were in very indifferent condition. There has been the usual demand for local fruit, with the market still dull for dessert apples and only fair for cookers. Pears, too, are still dull. There was a fair inquiry today for hothouse tomatoes. Ripe bananas brought higher values. Witli heavy supplies on hand of cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce and kumeras, the market price is low with the demand fair. There aro good supplies in hand of all vegetables in season. Supplies of radish are on hand, but there was no sale recorded. Supplies of poultry were good, prices being on a par with last'quotations. Values for cockerels and good hens remain firm, and a keen demand existed throughout the sale. Ducks and drakes were penned in average numbers, and prices rose slightly. Pullets remained unchanged.
