PLANS NOT COMPLETED
MILFORD BATHING POOL SCHEME TO BE APPROVED Considering that tho money which would be spent by the Takapuna Borough Council as its share of the cost of constructing the proposed bathing pool in the Wairau Estuary at Milford could better be expended in other ways, Mr. J. Guiniven proposed at a meeting last evening that the council take no part in the construction but give permission, should the Marine /Department approve of the proposal to the North Shore Transport Company to construct the baths at its own expense. After lengthy discussion the motion was lost, the mover standing alone. Mr. Guiniven said that there was plenty of urgent work to be done on footpaths ana roads which would take all the money that could be spared. A bathing pool was not wanted and it was not right for the council to defy tho ratepayers on such a question. Tinscheme had as its basis the hope that it might popularise the cabaret at Milford and the bus transport route. It was difficult to enclose tidal waters, Mr. Guini'ven pointed out. and typhoid germs would lurk in the silt that was certain to be deposited. A better scheme would be to enlarge the park area. The proposed expenditure of £4OO might well become £I,OOO before the last bills were paid. The 1 motion was seconded pro forma by Mr. A. IT. Wilkie. NOT FULLY PLANNED Mr. R. M. Algie, chairman of the Parks Committee, asked that too hasty an opinion should not be formed of the scheme, which had not yet planned fully. He asked that criticism be withhold until arrangement? were completed by the committee. That the scheme would give greai benefit at little cost was the view of Mr. L. H. Titchener. The council was obliged to supply only stone to the value of £350 from its own quarry an<* labour worth £SO in cartage. Th* scheme would involve £5,000 and considerable labour at no cost to the rat»* payers. Both Mr. B. C. Hart and Mr. J. E Colegrove spoke in a similar manner Mr. Guiniven was asked to defer h»s motion until full arrangements were made known, but preferred to go to n division. “The plans are yet only tentative and will bo sent down to Wellington for the inspection of the Minister of Laboui who is to be asked for a subsidy.' stated the Mayor. Mr. J. W. Williamson. If no subsidy could be secured tho scheme would lapse and the council would not be expected to pay penny. The motion was then put and lost oy nine votes to one.
