SUBSIDY IMPERATIVE

NORFOLK ISLAND TRADE The steamer Hikurangi will not make any further trips to Norfolk Island unless a Government subsidy is forthcoming. This announcement was made this morning by Spedding, Limited, which firm was appointed to operate the vessel on that run on behalf of the owners, James Smith and Company. Applications for the subsidy have been submitted to the Cook Islands Department by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and by Speddlng, Limited. It will be impossible for the vessel to operate otherwise than at a loss until the former trade with Auckland lias been regained, and till then aid is imperative. If a subsidy is granted there is no reason why the Hikurangi should not continue in the service.
