DEVONPORT COUNCIL

J OMNIBUS LICENSING CRUSHING ON FERRIES It is a downright insult to the Borough Council for the No. 2 Omnibus Licensing Authority to interfere in this way with a matter that concerns the financial affairs of the Borough of Devonport. and of which the council should be the best judge,” asserted Mr. 'VV. S. Campbell at a meeting of the Devon port Borough Council last evening, when the* decision of the No. 2 Authority declining the council’s application for varying a bus route from Oxford Terrace to Tainui Road was received.

Mr. Campbell added that he did not know how the Devonport delegates on the Licensing Authority voted. The suggestion to appeal against the decision was voted down by five to three.

"It would be more advantageous to the North Shore if we found a site for an airport on this side of the harbour, or for a commercial seaplane base,” commented Mr. T. Walsh on an invitation from the Auckland City Council to send two delegates to a meeting of local bodies to consider the question of a commercial airport for Auckland. Mr. W. Cassels-Browil will represent Devonport and put the North Shore’s point of view. The Auckland Harbour Board informed the council that the crushing on to the gangway by passengers disembarking at Devonport during rush hours was not in any way different from conduct to be observed in other transport systems.

The Harbour Board’s traffic inspector also reported that the onus oj: controlling traffic was on the Ferry Company. Another request for the building of a rest room for women a.t the .Mechanics’ Bay vehicular stage was declined by the board.

A subsidy of £ll6, on Poppy Day funds, was received from the Government. This money is being utilised for employing returned soldiers and the work has already been commenced. Devonport will not oppose the introduction of the Auckland Provincial Water Board Bill.
