EXPLORER’S OUTBURST
AUSTRALIA WOULD NOT HELP WILKINS TO POLE IN SUBMARINE Reed. 10.45 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. When interviewed, Sir Hubert Wilkins, the explorer, said he is to leave New York in May of next year on his submarine expedition to the North Pole. The actual expedition begins at Spitzbergen. The object is purely geophysical and will show the world the possibility of reaching the pole by diving beneath the ice. He will be able to stay under for a
maximum of two and a-half days. He has arranged to broadcast progress while on the surface. “Why does not Australia help me?” he asked. “It is a remarkable tiling that an Australian is- heading an expedition without a single penny from his own country.”
