HELP FOR FLAXMILLERS
ADVANCE TO BE MADE TO INDUSTRY KEEPING MEN EMPLOYED THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tuesday. According to the answer given by the Prime Alinister, the Hon. G. W. I< ’orbes, to a question in the House today, flaxmillers will be given an advance by the Government to help tide them over the winter months. Air. C. E. Macmillan (Reform —Tauranga) asked an urgent question of Air. Forbes as to what the Government was doing to assist the flaxmillers, a deputation of whom had waited upon Mr. Forbes recently in Auckland. The price of hemp was so low that the industry was being run at a loss at present, and it was desired that some help should be given to keep the men in employment. Mr. Forbes said he had already sent a reply to the Leader of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who had introduced the deputation at Auckland. The Government would make an advance to the industry to help it over the winter months and keep the mills going. Because of the present, financial position the Government could not make a grant, but only an advance. Air. Coates: It is only for a short period, though. Air. Forbes: That was all they asked for.
