WAIKAREMOANA SAFE
BUT WILL NOT SUPPLY AUCKLAND MINISTER’S STATEMENT THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, Tuesday. That there was no justification for the rumours that the Waikaremoana electric-power generation station was unsafe was a statement made in the House of Representatives today by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, in answer to a question. The Minister also stated that it was not intended to supply Auckland with power from Waikaremoana. Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour —Napier) asked an urgent question whether there were any grounds for the rumour that the works and environment at Waikaremoana were unsafe. He also wished to know if it was proposed to extend the supply of electric power from that station to reduce the loss of the supply from Arapuni. In his reply the Minister stated that ho had not heard the rumours and that there was nothing at the works to justify them. It was not proposed to extend the supply of power from Waikaremoana to the Auckland district because, by the time a line could be carried through, the demand on the Waikare-Mangahao system would be such that there would not be left any appreciable quantity for distribution in the Auckland district.
