“FETE NATIONALE”

CELEBRATING OF FRANCE’S NATIONAL DAY AUCKLAND FUNCTION The “Fete Nationale” of France was celebrated by the Auckland French Club at a largely attended social gathering held last evening. It was a concert “de gala" and the club roofn was tastefully decorated for the occasion with flags and bunting. Mr. H. A. Francis, vice-president of the club, presided, while among the others present were: —Mr. W. Boyle (American Consul) and Mrs. Boyle: Mr. J. A. C. Allum (Consul for Switzerland) and Miss Allum; Mr. Norman Heath (Consul for Latvia); Mrs. W. J. Napier; Mr. J. Barr; Mr, Joseph Andre, a Belgian citizen from Mons; Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Reed, from Whangarei and Mr. and Mrs. F. Thompson. During the singing of La Marseillaise by Mr. Joseph Andre, the audience stood and all joined in the chorus. Other items on the programme were; A speech on Clemenceau, by M. Paul Serre, Consul for France and president d’honneur of the French Club; a lecture on Napoleon, by Mr. F. W. Reed, O.A. (Officer d’Academie); a lecture on the ‘‘House of Rothschild." rbv Mr. F. Thompson; conjuring tricks by “Cardo,” the king of cards; a monologue, “Le Mouchoir,” and French anecdotes, by M. Serre and songs by Mrs. J. J. Sullivan (Manon Lescaut, and Elegie de Massenet).
