TO TEACH SAFETY RULES

SOUTH ISLAND UNION’S WORK It should not be very long now before the organisation of the South Island (New Zealand) Motor Union is brought to bear on the important subject of bringing safety principles more prominently before the children in the schools. At the recent quarterly meeting it was decided that the union should arrange for the distribution of posters among the schools and that lectures be given. Though considerable work in lecturing to the children has been done in Otago, this is really the first movement to embrace all the schools of the South Island. Indeed, every school in the Dominion will come within the scope of the scheme as the poster idea, originated in the North Island, will be carried into effect by the North Island Union. So far as the motoring organisations are concerned there has been much backwardness in spreading safety propaganda among the children of the schools and the present gesture is welcome. Motor vehicles are now so common that they are inclined to be accepted as a matter of course by children and the potential danger which they represent is lost sight of. The teaching of safety principles among the school children is one of the most valuable duties before the motoring organisations. It is not a work to be experimented with for 12 mouths or two years. The job, oncn started, should be continued, and widened in cope, to be really efficacious.
