“CONDEMNED”
COMING TO THE NEW REGENT Ronald Colman goes back to his first love in “Condemned,” his new alltalking picture which comes to the Regent Theatre on Friday. After having tried his hand at comedy-drama in “Bulldog Drummond,” his first talker, Colman has returned to the enhearteaing fastneses of romantic drama. “Condemned” is a story of Devil’s Island, the notorious penal colony. In it Colman is seen as a lovable renegade who is redeemed by a woman’s ennobling love. Ann Harding. Dudley Digges. both Broadway favourites, and Louis Wolheim are in the supporting cast. The advent of talking pictures has produced a new era of things in the profession of directing movies. Some few* directors have had experience on stage as well as screen, but the majority, including most of the famous members of the profession, are now accustomed to working with an experienced stage director to handle the dialogue from the stage point of view. In “Condemned.” for instance. "Wesley Ruggles was responsible for general run of the picture, while Dudley Digges. veteran New York actor and director for the New York Theatre Guild, supervised the dialogue as well as playing the role of the warden in the picture proper.
