ONE WOMAN VENTURE

“INDEPENDENT THEATRE” FORMED SYDNEY ENTHUSIAST Miss Doris Fitton (Mrs. N. K. Mason), of Sydney, has undertaken a plucky one-woman theatrical enter- ! prise. This gifted amateur is unmistakably sincere in her attempt, through her newly-formed ‘‘lndependent Theatre,” to solve the problem of giving Sydney folk good plays, well acted. Emphasis, note, is on the acting. “Most amateur clubs or companies,” says Miss Fitton, “offer the chance to act as an Inducement to prospective members. This is a fatal error, for it stands to reason that all people cannot act. As a result of it, unsuitable people have had to be pitchforked into parts which they could never hope to play with success. This is not fair to the public who pay to see a good show. Miss Fitton intends to have a standing cast of 16 players, all experienced, and has succeeded in getting Mr. Harry Tighe, the well-known Sydney playwright, as producer for the first season or two. This organiser has not let the grass grow under her feet. She has secured a clubroom, and hopes to gather round her a large number of people interested in good plays, with studio evenings and readings as some of the activities. Money, of course, will have to be found before the first season opens at the Savoy Theatre, it is hoped, in September, but even this necessity will not make Miss Fitton have recourse to a committee. She is determined to run the venture unaided.!
