TAURANGA NOTES

The Electricity Committee reported at tho meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council in favour of a reduction in the electric lighting charges by a penny a unit. The recommendation was adopted. The charges for electricity are now a penny a unit for cooking and domestic heating, and sixpence a unit for lighting. The engineer was authorised to install new plant for the works at a cost of £3,500. Building permits for the month were £1,450.

There was a small attendance at a public meeting called for the purpose of forming a branch of the National Defence League. Mr. W. S. Sinclair, county chairman, presided. After the objects of the league had been explained it was resolved to form a branch, and the following officers were elected: —President, Mr. A. F. Tunks; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. A. .Sharp and W. T. Sinclair: secretary, Mr. L. ft. Wilkinson; treasurer, Mr. P. Lumley.
