FORT JERVOIS

LEASED TO THE NAVAL RESERVE GUNS MAY BE USEFUL Special to THE S L’-V WELLINGTON, Today. Fort Jervois, on Ripa Island, which has been evacuated by the Defence Department after many years, is to be let to the Canterbury Division of the Royal' Naval Volunteer Reserve at a nominal rental. The term of the lease and the conditions will be announced shortly. Last week, the small steamer Cygnet loaded ammunition at the Ripa Island wharf and brought it to Wellington, where it will be stored at Mahanga Bay. The fort, which has been obsolete for years, has been used as an ammunition store and training ground for the Dominion’s forces and it is understood that its evacuation by the military is the first step in tlie .Government’s defence economies, though the fort has not been of any great value for years past. Some guns are to remain on the island a d may be useful to the R.N.V.R.
