RELIEF WAGES

INCREASE MOTION LOST IN WELLINGTON LABOUR MAY TAKE ACTION Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The City Council last evenfhg rejected a motion that, In view of the increased subsidy paid by the Government on loans raised for the relief of unemployment, the award rate of wages should be paid to all men on standard works. The motion was lost by 10 to 4, only Labour members voting for it. The other members strongly objected to the drain on the public, and the burden thrown on the municipality. Prices, it was urged, must come down, including wages for labour. The secretary of the Labourers’ Union stated, after this decision was known, that the matter would probably be referred to superior Labour bodies.
