“LOVE LIES” SUCCESS
“SO THIS IS LOVE” SOON The success of the “Love Lies” entertainment at His Majesty's goes to prove that theatregoers still have a keen appreciation of true stage entertainment. Last evening the J. C. Williamson, Limited. English Musical Comedy Company played to a large and intensely amused audience. The popularity of the stage entertainment has been well instanced since the opening performance. The last three evening performances of “Love Lies” are announced, and a final matinee trill be given tomorrow afternoon.
On Tuesday evening the company will appear in the initial presentation in Auckland of the London musical comedy triump, “So This is Love.” Arrangement for the production of the entertainment by Clem Dawe and the “Love Lies” company was made soon after the premiere in England. The musical numbers of “So This Is Love” are extremely tuneful, and there are excellent duets and concerted numbers. The ballet is one of the best features of the show. “Graceful dancing woven into a number of novel items,” wrote a Melbourne critic, “was encored again and again, a brilliant variety of costumes and picturesque lighting effects enhancing the scenes. A daring adagio by Mona Zeppel and John Robertson is another outstanding turn.”
Clem Dawe is said to be at his best as Potiphar Griggs, a character created in London by Stanley Lupino. Mr. Dawe witnessed several of the London performances.
Edward Sedgwick, who directed Buster Keaton in “Free and Easy.” was once a newspaper reporter. So was Lawrence Gray, actor, and Robert Hopkins, dialogue writer, was a cartoonist. Willard Mack, playwright, was once a journalist, and * Roland xoung. actor, in his youth served as a printer’s “devil.”
