VOLUNTARY LEVY SYSTEM PRODUCE BOARD’S DECISION Press Association 'WELLINGTON. Today. The Dairy Produce Board yesterday discussed the question of the quality •! cheese. Complaints have been mad* that the general grade of exports a the season just concluded showed a serious decline compared with that «f previous years. Mr. W. M. Singleton, director of liM Dairy Division, was present at tJH meeting of the board by request. A resolution passed at the Hamilton conference of the National Dairy Association had been referred \o board. The resolution recommend^

the institution of a system of compulsory levy and the payment of a premium on cheese according to qualuj. such levy to be made and premia paid on groups of factories accordn to grading stores; the basis of scheme to be the grading points ard differential payments suggested by tht director of the dairy division. The conference also suggested that separa:« pools should be established for factories manufacturing from pasteurised milk.

The secretary reported yesterday that an analysis of the voting at tb* dairy conference showed that factories representing 34.935 tons of cheese had voted in favour of the resolution, and factories representing 13,013 tons

against it. Correspondence was received from the South Island Dairy Association, indicating that if the resolution was to be made applicable and the premium system established, it should be made on a national basis ard not on the basis of pools for separate grading ports. After a very long discussion the following resolution was carried: — as the board does not possess sufficient power to carry into effect the recommendations of the Hamilton conference. it is prepared to assist heartily in promoting a voluntary scheme in any particular district which rosy have the effect of improving the nullity of cheese and the beard’s officers would be available to undertake wort in this connection.” It is understood that efforts will made forthwith in Taranaki for agreement to be reached on a voluntary basis to apply a scheme under which all cheese would be levied for * definite sum per crate, and the suib so received divided in accordance sr.r the grade accorded the cheese, tM* encouraging managers to aim at 1 high quality.
