THE AMATEURS Under conditions which were ■ ■ conducive to fast times, the Mann' kau Amatmr Cycling Club last gst urday further advanced its ro& j programme. The riders were con) pelled to ride over surfaces for part of the journey. A cold wind did not add to the pleasantness of the ride. However, desrml the elements, a good field wan rot away. At the conclusion of t** race it was hard to distinguish Lb* contestants on account of the heavy coating of silt each one had received from his wheels in the course of the ride. Once more R. Foubister “showed a clean pair of heels” to the other contestants. By gaining fir.-t and fastest Ron has set a record for the new circuit. Off the lmin mark, with a good field of pedallers. he soon singled himself out. to go on and wan with the greatest of ease. The new handicapper will have no difficulty in finding a mark for this strong, lone rider in future. A co-marker of the winner, e. Avery, was second. Avery has showed to advantage over the new circuit. He did not despair when Foubister rushed away to the lead. In gaining second place this cyclist is to be commended for he had a real hard ride for his prize. * * » C. Harris still manages to get into the honours list. From his Sofia mark, Harris pedalled solidly throughout. When heads were turned for the judge Claude was called upon to stall off strong challenges by three other riders. This he did in a fashion that won for him much praise after the event. N. Casey. E. Cleaver and S. Baird were three riders who did not reli* the conditions last week-end. On an ideal day these pedallers win show up. for they are a good trio of pacemakers. With the winner standing them a start on Saturday the abovementioned should manage to hold him off. * • • A new style of competition will be held on July 13. when a club run will be held. On this outing a hill-climb-ing contest will be staged. It is quietly rumoured that this is what R. Foubister was practising when he crashed at the Stadium last season. The races set down for Saturday are a 15 miles (three laps) senior race and a five-mile junior handicap. The latter will not be staged if sufficient entries are not forthcoming. With all the back-markers on deck again some good racing should be witnessed.

Threatening rain was the order of the day last Saturday afternoon when the officials of the Auckland Cycle Club advanced its road programme a further stage with a 13-mile race It was early evident that the weather would keep a large number of riders a wav. Nevertheless it was a firstclass field sent away by the starter. The riders had hardly covered a mile of the journey before they were unrecognisable. being covered from head to foot with silt. Another feature of the race was that every pedaller started on liis own, but it was not long before the “wise heads were bunched and lapping it out together. After three laps bad been traversed the field comprised two bunches, the front riders being Wilcox (4mm). Lowndes <3Jmin), Clay (3min> and McDonald (21 min), with S. Haves (40sec) and K. Mathieson (lmin). gradually reducing their handicap. It was only over the last mile that all but two of the starters joined forces, again demonstrating the ability of Handicapper Knight. In the sprint to the line K. Mathieson stole a march on the others to gain a two lengths’ lead, which he maintained till the end, defeating the fastest time rider, Hayes, for first place. * * * K. Mathieson has at last broken his spell of outs. For the season s riding Ken has now a win and two seconds. In his two previous starts he met with minor accidents on both occasions. The first time a number of spokes were torn from his front wheel, while a puncture forced him to retire from the next event. By his win over S. Hayes, Mathieson showed that he is now at the top of his form, and should the handicapper elect to place him on the mark of honour, he should worry the other scratch riders the whole distance. As Mathieson is generally on his own, just ahead of the back bunch, he is in a position of having to wait for them, thus giving himself no chance for time. It would bo better for him to forgo his handicap. With two fastest times on end to his credit S. Hayes is now due to again start off scratch. Riding from a handicap mark, Hayes has had the services of other back markers, thus helping him to out-pedal lone rider Ritchie and so gain time honours. In his previous encounters with Ritchie. Hayes has had to be content with seconds, but the former cannot give Slater a start when he has co-markers to help him along. * * • For his first outing C. Wilcox, late of Christchurch, put up a first-class performance. He rode the whole distance
