LIVE STOCK EXHIBITS
DAIRY TYPES ON SHOW POINTS FOR FARMERS Another extremely interesting feature at the show' is the section given over to exhibits of milking cattle. Three breeds are represented—Friesians, Jerseys and Ayrshires. The idea of this section is more to give the various breed societies concerned an opportunity of placing before fanner visitors the merits of their respective breeds as butter-fat ; producers. In this respect the section carries out a very useful pur- j pose. Not only are officials in at- | tendance prepared to give inquirers j any possible information or advice, i but effort is made to propagate the | doctrine that it only pays to hold record backed stock. As is usual at most shows of this nature, the Friesian is well to the fore, and, with the aid of diagrams and pamphlets, officials in charge endeavour to show that the big-boned black and white cow is the most economical animal on almost any class of land. Officials are able to show figures and records from all parts of the world in support of their claims. With the Jerseys and Ayrshires the position is the same, and even though a visit to the three stalls may leave j the farmer a little baffled as to which ' is the best breed from which to lay the foundation of a profit-earning herd in face of world tendencies toward lower price levels, he must, at least, be convinced on one point—that it does not pay to hold anything but high testing cows. TOPDRESS FOR SPRING FEED A sure and certain way for farmers : to obtain early spring feed is to top dress with Westfield High-grade Super A dressing of Westfield Super applied j to the pastures in July will work won ders in producing grass in August and September, when the animals want plenty of young sweet grass. Westfield Super is a product of Kempthorne, Prosser and Co.
