COLOMBO RACING
UP-TO-DATE APPOINTMENTS Two well-known Taranaki lads, N. F. Johnson and H. K. Alexander, set off shortly after the Wanganui meeting to journey to Calcutta, wliere they intended to follow up their calling as jockeys for the racing season. However. on arrival at Colombo they were so greatly struck with the live interest that is taken in racing and the splendid prospects that they decided to remain at Colombo for two or three months. In a letter to his father Johnson states that the courses there are the finest he has ever seen, and the appointments the most up-to-date. Snapshots of some of the and of the magnificent totalisator houses, where bets are made either straight out or for a place, fully confirm this. Practically all the horses are of Arab strain, and as the weights are in the vicinity of 8.4 and 8.5, both jockeys expect to be able to secure a lot of riding. Already each has been asked to do riding for two or three owners.
