REWA’S ANCHORS

RECOVERY FROM SEA OPERATIONS COMMENCE TODAY The two large, old-fashioned stock anchors at which the barque Rewa strained for nearly eight years in storm and calm, are being lifted and removed by the Auckland Launch and Towboat Company to the Eastern Reclamation. The work commenced today, and is expected to be completed tomorrow. The anchors ar«* the old-fashioned stock type, and each weighs approximately three tons. They are made of studded links, which are two ind ahalf inches in thickness and about 12 inches in length. There are 180 fathoms of chain. Each length of chain is attached to a revolving swivel, which was aitached to the barque by two cables. This arrangement enabled the boat to move freely without entangling the anchors. The work of lifting the anchors is far more arduous than appears at first sight. It is first of all necessary to disconnect the cables from the swivei. after which one is attached to the scow, thus holding fast one of the anchors. The remaining anchor is then hauled in by means of a windlass. When this is completed the windlass is secured to the remaining anchor, which is hauled in. The magnitude of the chains and their tremendous weight makes tho work both difficult and hazardous.
