Racing at Trentham In Showery Weather
WELLINGTON MEETING AVRO WINS HURDLES THE SUN’S Special Reporter TRENTHAM, Today. The Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting was continued today in cold, showery weather. There was a good attendance, and the track was heavy. Results: CORUNNA HURDLES, Of £270; 1£ miles. I—AVRO, 10.12 1 4 MAKE UP, 9.10 2 5 PARIS. 9.6 3 Scratched: Zippor. Won by three lengths, with three between second and third. Time, 2.57*. The Corunna Hurdles saw spirited betting betwen Avro and Mountain Guide, the former being actual first choice. Deluge led along the straight and over the second fence from Makeup, Avro, Dobbin, Daylight, Mountain Guide, Paris, and Opa, the field soon stringing out. Along the back Deluge and Avro were forcing the pace from Makeup and 'Mountain Guide, these being at good intervals. Avro was first into the straight from Makeup. Deluge, and Mountain Guide. There was little at the last fence between Avro, Makeup, Mountain Guide, and Paris, but Mountain • Guide fell when looking a possibility. Avro then went on to win by three lengths from Makeup, with Paris four lengths back. Deluge was fourth, and Daylight and Opa followed. TRIAL PLATE, Of £260; 6 furlongs. I—COON SONG, 10.0 3 13—ROSSHIRE, 9.0 2 6 JAYSON, 9.0 t 7 TERRA FIRM A, 9.0 t t dead-heat for third. Scratched: Air Laddie. Won by one length, with three between second and third. Time, 1.18. Arisus was a well-backed fancy in the Trial Plate, but he got badly left at the start. The favourite, Coon Song, was always in front, being attended over the early part by Intruder, and Prince Desmond. On to the course proper Coon Song, Vandyke, and TerraFirma were almost in line, with Jayv son, Rosshire, and Win Acre following. Coon Song shook off his opponents in the run home to win by two and a-half lengths from Rosshire, the Takanini youngster, who was paying over a score to win. Jayson and Terra Firma were together three lengths back, and then came Winacre, Vandyke, Dunraven, and Prince Desmond. SEATQUN HANDICAP Of £260; 7 furlongs 1— TOWN MAJOR, 10.4 1 7—TAHOMA, 9.11 2 9 —MALAHAT, 9.D 3 Scr.: Bon Acre. Won by two lengths, with two between second and third. Time, 1.31*. Town Major and Snow Prince were well backed in the Seatoun Handicap. Brilliant Light Jed out from Snow Prince, Singer, Semper Paratus, The Warden, Malahat, Pedestal and Town Major.. Crossing the top Snow Prince was in charge from Semper Paratus and they turned for home together ahead of Tahoma, Town Major and Singer. In the run home, Town Major came through to beat Tahoma by two lengths, while there were three lengths back to Malahat. The Warden was fourth and Brilliant Light, Disrank, Lucretia, Singer and Pedestal followed. Snow Prince stopped badly. MARIRI HACK STEEPLES Of £275; 2* miles I—H YM ESTRASON, 10.0 1 3—CORNEROFF. 9.5 . . 2 2 SIR MOMENT, 9.10 , .. 3 Scr.; Wyeford. Won by a length, with two lengths between second and third. Time, 5.31*. Hymestrason again won the Hack Steeplechase, outjumping the opposition and scoring conveniently after being anything but well ridden. Corneroff, Waitaunaha and Sir Moment were always near the front over the first round, but crossing the top Hymestrason moved up and hit the front, going on to win very easily by a length and a-half from Corneroff, whose jumping could be improved. Sir Moment, who nearly lost his rider three fences from home, was two lengths away third, with Taramoa and Waitaunaha well back. PARLIAMENTARY HANDICAP Of £500; 1* miles 2 TRUE BLOOD, 9.9 1 3 MENDIP. 10.1 2 S—BLACK DUKE, 10/11 3 Scr.: Courageous. Won by half a length, with one length between second and third. Time, 2.21.
