ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY

COMMENTS BY JUDGE "Many-of the exhibitors in the landscape section show great promise, while a few have produced really charming work," said Mr. J, Weeks judge, reviewing the work in the drawing and painting section. There was, however, little attempt to introduce freshness of subject. The water-colour section was excellent. The still-life studies were not strong many pictures tending toward the hackneyed. The prize head in the portrait section was good, though many of the competitors were inclined to b'o photographic in their treatment. The majority of the photographic prints reflected great credit on their exhibitors. The awards are as follow: ART Commercial Art.—Bettering in black ?r d .A hl i!r e: w - J - Pierce, 1; E. FRUIT SECTION “VERY DISAPPOINTING" “The fruit exhibits constitute a disgrace for a city like Auckland, which last season exported about 104,000 cases

of apples. The number is most disappointing.” Harsh words, but justified, according to Mr. L. Paynter, of the Department of Agriculture, who judged the fruit exhibits at the Winter Show. There could, he said, have been a great many more entries in nearly all the apple classes, while in the pear section there were too few P. Barrys and Keiffers. The number of citrusfruit exhibits was also small. Results of the judging:— Best plate Ballarat Seedlings: F. Charman, 1 and 2. Best Delicious: A. B. Congdon, 1. Granny Smith: J. T. Bennett, 1; F.
