UNPROFITABLE LODGER
LEFT WITH LANDLORD’S CLOTHES CONVICTED OF THEFT When Walter Smith left the house in Newton where he had a room, he took with him clothing, kitchen utensils and jewellery belonging to his landlord. He was convicted of theft in the Police Court this morning, but Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. decided to give the man a chance and he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. Smith, alias William Hanon, a labourer, aged 39. pleaded guilty to the theft of articles valued at £S 5s and belonging to Thomas Richard Trigg, on June 34. Mr. Aekins appeared for accused. Chief-Detective Hammond added that accused had left a rather cheeky note stating that he was sorry he had taken the goods, but was going to the South island. Smith’s wife had died last month and he was left with three young children. It was three years since he had last beeu before the Court. Mr. Aekins said the man was doing his best lor the children. Sister Esther had work for him at the Manna House. The magistrate agreed, to give Smith a chance.
