FORESTRY AND TAXATION
WORK BEING HINDERED SUPERTAX CRITICISED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Some criticism of taxation matters was made by Mr. James Deans, of Christchurch, president of the New Zealand Forestry League, at the opening of the annual conference last evening. ITe was pleased to note, said Mr. Deans, that the forest service had again been able to carry out a very full programme of planting and had extended its operations in several new directions. “A deterrent to planting is the extra taxation that has been jfiaced on the farming community during the year,” continued the president. “This may not appear to affect many, but the feeling of insecurity to which it gives rise will do much harm because if super taxes are to remain farmers who have to pay them will certainly curtail expenditure which will not bring in an immediate return. I think it is quite safe to say that the payers of the super-tax are men who would normally do a good deal of planting on their properties.” After a brief reference to the work ofi the forest service, the speaker said it might be well if they could get more information as to how the different phases of forestry were progressing, such as thinning and pruning. Regeneration of the kauri had been under observation for some years, as well as its annual increment, and some information on the subject would be wetcome at the present time.
