ANNOYED BY DETECTIVE’S REMARKS EARLY MOURNING ARREST Tottering, as shuffled into the j Police Court dock* yesterday, Ganesh * Givan. an Indian, the railing for supix*rt and a constable I rushed to aid him he seemed likely J to fall. “He is all H'ght. He is only looking for sympa4\’iy,” commented ! Chief-Detective Hanunond. Further remarks by the chiefHidetective led to an outburst of rage from Givan and he had to be dragged! from the dock : by three constables. Givan,* a hawker, plodded guilty to I being found on the enc*lc*sed premises °f u. house in Nelson reet. Sub-Inspector said the ! man had been found at o4£lo this morn- i ****» A night watchman employed by the Fletcher Construction Company I had informed Constable Vtoward that there was a man hanging about the i vicinity. A search was ,made and j Givan was found sheltering on the verandah of a private house. He was i doing no harm but he might easily f have frightened the occupuAts. Consulting the man’s list, ?% r r. F. K Hunt S.M., said he was jus£t> out of gaol and had tiuite a lung list previous convictions. “You have never given me a change since I have been in this cokmtrv,” • pleaded Givan. The chief-detective: The socgaier hoi gets a ship and leaves, the bettkv. The magistrate pointed out thaththere i w-ere 200 seamen in Auckland wjhout ships. I bet yom- I 1 bet you,” yelled accused as he wifi dragged from the dock. His countrymen won’t help him anyway,’ added Mr. Hammond. Accused was ordered to come up foiA sentence if called upon.
