CHINESE RECEIPT
MONEY FOR RELIEF OF FAMINE SUFFERERS AUCKLAND’S CONTRIBUTION To European eyes this letter in Chinese means very little. It is, however, a receipt from the Chinese-Foreign Famine Relief Committee in Shanghai for the sum. of £153 18s 2d. This money, which assisted in the relief of famished people in the provinces of Kansu, Shensi and Honan, in North - West China, was exchanged for 1,698.32 dollars, Shanghai currency. In a covering letter to the Mayor of Auckland, the Chinese Consul, Mr. Ou Tsin Shuing, states that the receipt was made out to the various benevolent donors of Auckland, and the letter covering the receipt was addressed to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. This embodied the heartfelt thanks of the Chinese Famine Relief Committee for the donation. The money sent to the relief fund from Auckland included £lO5 donated by the City Council.
