BIRKENHEAD BAND
ELECTION OF OFFICERS The 12th annual meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Band was held in the Victoria Hall, Birkenhead, last, evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail. presiding. The annual report showed that the membership of the band had been very steady. Three new members joined, one resigned and the total strength at present was 24, wtih three learning members. The 28 instruments were in good condition, and hardly any expense had been incurred in repairs. The Mayor complimented the band on its improved playing, and said the council was very sympathetic toward the band. It was decided that a deputation consisting of the Mayor, Messrs. C. Paton. H. Haymen and G. Huddleston wait on the Bevonport Steam Ferry Company in connection with travelling concessions on the boats which had been granted to the bandmaster, but had now been declined. Lieutenant J. T. Lighton, tlie bandmaster. said that arrangements had been made for the band to give a trial programme at 3 YA. and. if successful, a 12 months* engagement would be open for them. It was decided to enter tine band in the B and C grade competition, to be held at Wellington. The election of officers resulted: Patrons. Messrs .T. P. McPhail and J. C. Yeomans: vice-patrons, Messrs. C. E. Campbell. W. B. Darlow, R. G. Dudding, J. W. Craven and R. E. Stott; lion, treasurer, Mr. P. J. McGovern; hon. secretary, Mr. V. Queenin: librarian. Mr. B. Sapsworth: hon. auditor. Mr. N. J. Stewart; executive. band representatives. Messrs. A. Stott. O. Huddleston. F. Pugh and E. Swindail: council representatives. Messrs. H. Hayman. G. Jasper and G. Hewson: honorary members’ representatives, Messrs. J. Macdonald and E. P. Lanigan.
