EFFECT ON N.Z. MARKET
UNITED STATES TARIFF AND CANADIAN BUTTER
SERIOUS FOR PRODUCERS
Restrictions placed by the United States on importations of dairy produce from Canada are expected in some quarters to have a reflection in New Zealand's trade with Canada. The managing director of Amalgamated Dairies, Limited. Mr. W. Goodfellow, expects a considerable reduction in the amount of butter sent from this country to Canada. Another Auckland merchant, commenting on the new tariff wall raised by the United States, agreed that there was every likelihood of an adverse effect on New Zealand producers. Canada would, in consequence of the tariff, have more of her own produce within her doors and would not be so free in taking importations. It was probable that some time would be occupied in adjusting the new market conditions in Canada. Then again, proceeded the merchant.
there was the pending legislation at Ottawa which would have a great effect on New Zealand’s dairy produce exports to Canada. It remained to be seen what effect the new duty would have. According to Mr. Goodfellow, the dairy produce imported by the United States from Canada for the year ended September 30, 1929, had been: Cheese. 9,228,4001 b; cream. 2,495,207 gallons; milk, 3,712,030 gallons; milk in the form of condensed, evaporated and powdered, 2,440,5001 b. The present and proposed duties were as follow:
Mr. Goodfellow thought it apparent that the United States tariff was intended to shut out Canadian dairy produce. Me regarded the gradual loss to New Zealand of its butter market in Canada as highly serious. The United Kingdom remained Xew Zealand's one worthwhile permanent market, and the Government would be well advised to develop the United Kingdom market to a greater extent.
