RACECOURSE TIPSTERS IMPRISONED CHARGES OF VAGRANCY Said by Chief-Detective Hammond to be a decided nuisance wherever they went, Alexander Wallace Copley and John Richard Anderson appeared at the Police Court this morning and were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on vagrancy charges. The accused were said to be racecourse tipsters. Copley, aged 30, and Anderson, alias Pope, aged 24, both labourers, pleaded guilty to being Idle and disorderly in that they consorted with reputed thieves. , According to the chief-detective, the men did no work, but travelled from one race meeting to the next, picking up “mugs” and urging them to back certain horses. Copley had a long list and had been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for vagrancy at Palmerston North last year. Anderson had been up a year ago in Dunedin and -was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. Imposing the penalties, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., warned accused that they were not welcome in Auckland.
