SUBSIDY FOR ROADING
OFFER TO NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS Advice was received from the Main Highways Board at a meeting of the Xorthcote Borough Council last evening that a subsidy of £2 for £l had been granted for the maintenance of Onewa Road on the estimated cost of £2lB 59. The board also forwarded a memoranfium to the effect that as the speed and intensity of motor traffic has increased to such an extent, standards of maintenance must necessarily improve if the roads are to provide safe means of access at all times.. The borough overseer reported that the sealing of the shoulders at the intersections of the several streets with Queen Street would be put in hand at an early date, and that the Queen Street high level footpath was being prepa red for tar-sealing. Permission was granted to the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary to hold a street collection in the borough on June 27. A scheme for the employment of unemployed returned soldiers has been submitted to the Public Works Department for approval.
