ORPHANS’ HOME BOARD

WORK AT PAPATOETOE “Great <<redit is due to the managers of the Orphans’ Home that they v. ee that no child is placed in the home unless in dire necessity,” said Archdeacon Mac Murray, at the 70th annual meeting of the board of management of the Church of England’s Papatoetoe Orphans’ Home. The archdeacon, who presided, explained that many people tried to shift their responsibility for the care of their children on to the shoulders of charitable institutions such as the Papatoetoe Home. The speaker eulogised the work of the matron, Miss A. Hooker who, he said, had made the place a real home to the children with her kindly, happy spirit and unselfish work. The report for the past year of Dr. J. J. Valentine, the honorary medical officer, showed that the general health of the children had been excellent. No serious cases of illness had occurred. It was reported that the cost of the farm and garden had been practically covered by the value of the produce. The financial report showed that repairs and maintenance of the buildings had been an expensive item during the past tbrc-«- years, but arrears in this respect had been practically overtaken. The annual subscriptions showed a regrettable decrease.

Mr. ,T. I-J. Hutchison was elected chairman for the ensuing year, and ihe committee was re-elected as follows:—Dr. E. Roberton. Messrs. A. C. Lipscombe, Ward Baker, J. H. Hutchison, C. J. Tunks and E. Y’ates.
