COSTLY SETTLEMENT
WEST AUSTRALIA’S PLAN MAY BE ABANDONED PRICE WAS £10,000,000 PERTH. Tuesday. The Government of Western Australia in 1928 embarked upon an ambitious scheme of land settlement, comprising 3,500 farms on which a sum of £10,000,000 was to be sper\t. The scheme was well under way when disquieting reports were received to the effect that most of the land was unsuitable owing to the presence of alkali in the soils, resulting in unsatisfactory harvest returns. Scientific tests have been made, the reports as to which are in the hands of the State Government, which is now considering whethei the entire plan Should be abandoned
