AT KING’S WHARF
CHANGE-OVER LAST NIGHT ALL BOILERS WORKING Fully-manned and with all 15 boilers in operation. King's Wharf power station again came into complete commission last night, when the plant took over the direct current loading. Today the station is running parallel with Arapuni, and will continue to do so until the water in the headrace
falls below a working level. This was expected to occur at about midday today, but now it will probably be later in the afternoon. Since Arapuni was switched on to Auckland in October last, only a. skeleton staff has been retained at King’s Wharf. but recent developments have necessitated putting on a full staff. Yesterday morning a queue of 40 or 50 men in quest of work awaited the arrival of the station superintendent, but their services were not required, as the staff requirements had been met by the re-engagement of men who had previously been employed at the station. Coal stocks for a considerable period have been arranged for, and this morning a long rake of coal trucks was being unloaded into the station. At exceptional periods when the station was functioning previously, as much as 500 tons were used in a day.
The normal capacity of King s Wharf station is 26.000 k.w.. but it is hoped that to meet the present emergency a peak-load of 29.000 k.w. will be available.
