TRAGEDY IN TUNNEL

TRAIN PASSENGER KILLED Press Association DUNEDIN, Monday. The body of Mr. William Carter, butcher, of Balclutha, was found this morning in a tunnel on the Port Chalmers railway line, on the city side of Sawyers Bay. At an inquest evidence was given by a passenger on the 11.6 a.m. train from Dunedin to Port Chalmers that he last saw Carter standing on a carriage platform between St. Leonard’s Station and the tunnel. When the train emerged from the tunnel Carter was not to be seen. On going through the tunnel witnessed noticed a bump, and on arriving at Sawyers Bay he notified the guard. Carter was well known in Balclutha, where he had been in business’for many years. He is survived by his -widow, three sons and two daughters.
