LEADER CHALLENGED

CONSERVATIVES RESIGN AS A PROTEST FREE TRADE CHIEF ISSUE Reccl.* Noon. LONDON, Sunday. The political correspondents of the “Daily Chronicle” and “Daily Herald” assert that several Conservative members of the House' of Commons intend to resign their seats for the purpose of recontesting them as Empire free traders and challenging Mr. Baldwin’s leadership. A British Official Wireless message says:—

Speaking at Leeds yesterday Mr. Stanley Baldwin ex-Prime Minister, made * reference to a referendum which, he had stated, would be taken in the event of a future Conservative Government proposing a tax on foreign foodstuffs in order to give preference to Imperial foodstuffs. He said his reference was required so that the voice of the people would not be mistaken, and it would enable the Government to act so that any further Government following would not feel it was necessary to cancel any agreement of a fiscal nature that had been entered upon.

The McKenna duties had been approved and instituted by a Conservative Government, which had a mandate from the people, and a majority of over -200, and he hoped they would not see a minority Labour Government attempting* to sweep it away.
