EIGHTY-SEVEN TEAMS

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION IS GROWING BODY CHAMPIONSHIPS START Eighty-seven teams took part in the opening games of the Auckland Basketball Association’s inter-club championships on Saturday afternoon. This is the largest number of sides the association has ever had. the nearest approach to this total having been > in 1928. when 76 teams played under | its control. . . j Twenty-seven teams have joined the body since the official opening of this season three weeks ago. The large increase is due to the Interhouse Girls’ Sports Association teams having joined forces, 18 sides coming from "that source. The other nine teams consist of three extra Training College sides and six business-house sides. The new business-house teams are:—Stedman’s, Whitcombs and Tombs, Bycroft’s, Akarana, Woolworth’s. Osborne’s. Senior play was marked by a good deal of aimless jumping, passing and hurling, and wild shooting at goal occurred frequently. This sort of thing is more or less to be expected at this early stage. A few of last season’s leading lights are rather disappointing at the moment, but they will no doubt strike form shortly. Two new senior teams, Kai Toa and Edendale, showed good form. A senior player. Miss Phyllis Gear, playing for Grammar against Kai Toa at the Varsity courts, sprained her ankle badly. For the first time on record the association is leaving for playing grounds. This season rental is being paid the Auckland Education Board and the City Schools Committee.
