“A KINK FOR MOTOR-CARS”
YOUNG MAN IN TROUBLE From Our Oven. Correspondent DUNEDIN. Today. When Ernest Walter W arren appeared on remand in the Police Court yesterday, charged with attempting to obtain a car by false pretences, and. under the name of Ernest Walter Healey, with being an unlicensed driver, with having an unlicensed vehicle, and with dangerous driving. Chief-Detective Cameron remarked that accused seemed to have a kink as far as motor-cars and motor-cycles were concerned. For accused, Mr. J. P. Ward said that, pieced together, the offences made up a formidable list. but it should be noted that his client had never had a chance. The matter of his alias could easily be explained. After commenting on the lack of parental control, counsel said that accused might become a good citizen without going ~o the Borstal. In the past he had just been foolish. Referring to the probation officer's report, the magistrate remarked on the somewhat hectic career of the youth, and said that in his own interests a period of control at the Borstal Institution was best. Without; conviction he would be ordered to detained in the Borstal for a period not exceeding two years. On two of the West Coast charges he would be formally convicted and discharged, the charge of dangerous driving being withdrawn.
