CLOSED TO TRAFFIC
KARAKA BRIDGE UNSAFE From Our Oxen Correspondent PAPAKURA, Today. A subsidence of 12 inches vas observed in the centre of the Karaka Bridge late yesterday afternoon. la consequence, the bridge has been closed to traffic. The extent of the damage has not been ascertained yet. The bridge has two spans, each of about 80ft. It is constructed of concrete and was built by the Karaka Road Board some 15 years ago. The structure is at the end of Beach Road and spans a narorw arm of the Manukau Harbour, which reaches up as far as Drury. Residents of Karaka will have to make a lengthy detour through Drury in order to reach Papakura or the City. The mail services to Karaka and Waiau Pa pass over the bridge. The Franklin County Council engineer, Mr. J. F. McArthur, inspected the bridge at a late hour last evening, but was unable to ascertain the extent of the damage. . Another inspection is to be made today. In the meantime the bridge will be closed to traffic.
