MOTOR-CYCLIST’S DEATH

EVIDENCE AT INQUEST

An Inquest concerning the deal* oi Alan Walter Wilkin, of Papakura, who died as the result of injuries received in a motor-cycle collision on March 28 at Penrose, was held at Otahuhu this morning by Mr. F. H. Levien. S.M. A verdict was returned that Mr. Wilkin died from shock and scepticaemia following a fracture of the thigh, as the result of a collision betwen motor-cycles.

Herbert Jonas Purvis Crewther, tha rider of the other cycle involved in the collision, who lives at Portage Road, Otahuhu, said he was returning ftom the Auckland Hospital accompanied by his sister-in-law on the pillion seat. He travelled, along the Great South Road at 25 miles an hour on the correct side of the road. On approaching a bend the accident occurred. He remembered nothing more till the following Wednesday in hospital. He did not remember seeing the other cycle.

Annie Campbell, the pillion passenger on the cycle, said they trardied at a moderate speed. The light was burning well. She saw an approaching light at the bend a tew seconds before the collision.

Desmond Knight, a night-watchman, said he noticed the light of a motorcycle coming from Penrose and another from Otahuhu, the latter travelI ng fast. Both lights were in view till the time of the collision. Apparently the cycle coming from Otahuhu was on the wrong side of the road to get round the bend.

Leonard Aukett, a pillion passenger on deceased's cycle, said they were travelling from Papakura to Auckland. He did not see the approaching cycle. He estimated their speed at ‘ r °m 30 to 35 miles an hoar. He was Knocked unconscious. The lights on the cycle w r ere burning.
