INVERCARGILL’S NAME

“NOT EUPHONIOUS,” SAYS CITY COUNCILLOR A CHANGE SUGGESTED Press Association INVERCARGILL, Todav. The following recommendation front the Finahce Committee was considTrod by the Invercargill City Council last evening: “That the council take into consideration the suggestion that tho name of the city be changed from In. vercargill to Cargill.”

Mr. H. J. Macalister, chairman of the committee, said he knew many would oppose the change purely from conservatism. There was ample precedent for a change, both near at hand and far distant. He mentioned the change from Christiania to Oslo. He said Invercargill was not a euphonious name. He understood the name was bestowed in Dunedin as a joke during a banquet at which the superintendent Captain Cargill, was present. The name had been put up with by Southlanders long enough.

Mr. C. J. Brodrick said he considered it the most absurd suggestion he had ever heard.

• “Invercargill is a beautiful name - said Mr. T. O’Bryne, “and I should be sorry to see it changed to Cargill.** It was finally decided to delete the words “from Invercargill to Cargill” from the clause, and in this amended form the recommendation was adopted.
