UNIVERSITY PROBLEMS

PRO-CHANCELLOR ADVISES REFORMS LOW STANDARD OF ENGLISH WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In an address delivered at the opening - of the University Senate today, the Pro-Chancellor, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, dealt with the matriculation standard among other matters and particularly deplored the low standard of English, which revealed a lack of real ability to appreciate and use the language and which was noticeable through all the papers. The question of the general standard of attainment required for admission to the University in this country should be the subject of a special investigation. He was of the opinion that our standards did not compare favourably with those of the Home universities, at least in their fundamental subjects. Reforms needed in connection with the New Zealand University Colleges he gave as a reduction in the size of the classes and the number of lectures, the appointment of an adequate number of well-trained tutors to each subject, and the giving of more time for discussion and to enable students to work and think for themselves.
