BRIGHTER HAMILTON

NEW LIGHTING SCHEME From Our Oxen Correspondent HAMILTON, Wednesday. Widespread satisfaction has been expressed by Hamilton retailers at the decision of the Borough Council to illuminate both sides of Victoria Street with high-powered lights free of charge. The community lighting scheme in Hamilton was pioneered by Messrs. B. Martini and F. Brewer, who succeeded in linking up all the shopkeepers between Hood and Collingwood Streets on one side of the main road. The cost to each shopkeeper "as 4s each foot of frontage annually. Great difficulty was then experienced in getting other blocks to unite in the movement and a deadlock was reached. The new' move of the council is quite unexpected and has caused surprise and pleasure among the retailors, who agree that the scheme w r iil prove very beneficial to the town as a "hole and must produce a pleasing effect on strangers at night.
