CIVIC
I.AST DAYS OF “ATLANTIC” Based on the sinking of the Titanic, and showing the reactions of people to disaster, “Atlantic,” the entirely British-produced talkie which heads this week’s programme at the Civic Theatre, has a gripping realism that is obtained by only too few films. The scenes of the shipwreck in all its various phases are amazingly realistic, and prove that Elstree can teach Hollywood something in the way of production technique. Again, the voices of the English actors are a delight; the acting is very fine and the reproduction perfect. Of the large cast of English stars. Donald Calthrop, John Longden, Madeleine Carroll. Franklyn Dyall. Ellalaine Terris (Mrs. Seymour Hicks) and Monty Banks play the leading parts. There is a good supporting programme, including the delightful music by Ted Henkel’s Orchestra, and by Fred Scholl at the organ.
Lillian Roth, featured blues-singer on the audible screen, was a vaudeville head-liner at the age of 15.
