LAND SETTLEMENT
CROWN LANDS SHOULD BE DEVELOPED LEAGUE S SUGGESTION That 80,000 acres of Crown land similar to the Kapiro Land Block were available for development, has been pointed out to the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, by the Bay of Islands branch of the New' Zealand Land Settlement and Development I League. i This was stated at yesterday’s | m.eeting of the executive of the league ; in Auckland, Mr. G. A. McArthur being in the chair, when a report from the northern branch was received. The Bay of Islands branch had pointed out to Mr. Forbes during his visit,, that a privately-owned farm in I the neighbourhood was able to carry a cow to two acres. The department had stated that the cost of developing gum lands was £25 to £4O an aci’e. but the local branch was prepared to develop, fence and build in the Kapiro land for £lO an acre. The meeting expressed disappointment that in view of the importance of the large area under consideration the Minister had failed to take cognisance of the development possible with this type of land. It was also suggested that as the department was so slow, private enterprise should be given a chance. It was resolved that the league in its forthcoming tour should confer with the Bay of Islands branch to consider the settlement of the Kapiro Block. ITINERARY APPROVED The proposed itinerary of the forthcoming tour of members of the league was considered and approved by the meeting. The' party to tour the Southern towns will comprise Messrs W. J. Holdsworth, K. Glover-Clark and N. G. Gribble. Leaving Auckland next Monday the party will visit Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Wellington, meetings will be held with kindred associations in each centre. In addition to Messrs. Holdsworth, Glover-Clark and Gribble, the party to visit the Northern towns will include Messrs. PI. R. Jenkins and M. G. McArthur. The arrangements are for the league to visit Warkworth, Maungaturoto, Waipu on May 19, Dargaville on May 20, Whangarei on May 21, Kaikohe, Okaihau and Kohukohu on May 22, and Kaitaia on May
