MAKING HISTORY
DOMINION’S OPPORTUNITY GOVERNOR VISITS COLLEGE Yesterday an informal visit was paid to King's College by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Bledisloe. They made a brief inspection of the school and chapel, and his Excellency gave a short talk to the boys. The Vice-Regal party, on arrival at the school grounds, passed between ranks of cheering boys. Their Excellencies were received by the headmaster, the Rev. H. K. Archdall, Mr. C. T. Major, chairman of the board of governors, Messrs. J. E. Makgill and F. C. Mappin, two of the board members, and by the staff of masters. “We are most grateful to you for accepting our invitation to visit this school so soon after your arrival in the country,” said the headmaster, in wishing their Excellencies a happy and profitable term in the Dominion. Mr. Major spoke in similar strain. ‘‘New Zealand is a land of opportunity and, beyond all others in the British Empire, is bound to make history,” said Lord Bledisloe. “There is ono condition essential to enable the production of great men and women and the ushering in of prosperity—that the men and women should be fit to shoulder their tasks, being suitably trained to make the Dominion truly great.
“The burden of responsibility on you boys here in King’s College is very great,” he continued. “You have the opportunity and are receiving one of the best educations the country can give you. We have our rights, but we have also our responsibilities and it is not on the assertion of our rights but on the execution of our duties that success and happiness for ourselves and the position of our country depend.” The secret of success of the Empire had been that the schoolboys had learned to play the game for the side, rather than for themselves. This team spirit is as essential in life as at school.
Their Excellencies were again cheered as they left the school grounds.
