When a tyre blew out and the strain snapped the steering-column, a car, completely out of control, swerved across the main street, jumped the culvert, crashed through th© ~ of a hoarding, bit an iron rubbish receptacle, tearing it from its concrete bed, and finished up against a telegraphpole, which the force of the impact pushed over into a leaning position. The accident occurred at about 1.45 a.m. yesterday morning and the par,, which was a five-seater, was driven by Mr. John Gunnison, of Wellington. There were several passengers, but all escaped injury. The noise of the crash was great enough to awaken residents in the nearby houses.
