result of our experiments and the completely unanimous judgment of French and American investigators, as at least, physiologically neutral in its total effect.” * Professor Harper, director of tlie Indiana (U.S.A.) experimental station: “Superphosphate does not increase soil acidity or the need of lime. It. is sometimes said that the continued use of superphosphate will make the soil sour or acid. This 13 an assumption contrary to the facts so far as the actual field results are concerned. The experiments of this and other stations show that the use of superphosphate rather reduces the need of lime in acid soils. On the old experiment fields of the Perdue Farm, the plot where heavy applications of superphosphate alone have been used for the last 28 years is less acid than tlie plot alongside which has never received superphosphate.” Even without the testimony of such authorities as those quoted above, we have in New Zealand, under practical tests and accurately controlled experiments, sufficient evidence to show tiiat not only will superphosphate do all that is claimed for basic slag, but it will do it better and at less cost. It is probably safe to say that where basic slag is recommended, the real need is for draining and liming so as to build up conditions permanently to the stage where superphosphate does its best work. U is also safe to say that under any conditions of soil superphosphate can be depended upon to equal, if not exceed, the response from any other phosphatic fertiliser.
